On 27th March, 1915, the 1st Cornwall Light Infantry battalion of 14th Brigade, 5th Division moved into trenches south-west of Messines. They spent four days here and their relief on 31st March was hampered by bright moonlight of which the enemy took full advantage, unleashing both artillery and rifle fire. It is likely that this resulted in the death of Alfred Mansfield who was killed on this day. |
